To write a cover letter for a job application that generally requires targeting the specific company and job being applied for. Writing a new cover letter for each job application claims for plenty of time and effort. However, you can make a standard cover letter template that is easily adapted for each job application and save a substantial amount of time.

The steps for creating a cover letter for multiple job applications are:

  • Write a basic cover letter that complements your resume and highlights your two or three best qualifications.
  • Use capital letters. As you write the cover letter, every part of your cover letter that would need to be changed for another job position at a different company should be written in all capital letters. This is an easy way to remind yourself what areas must be changed. In the Header, it would be the date and employer name and address. The salutation will change with each job as well.
  • Changes in the introduction. Keep the introduction short as it will be almost completely changed every time you apply for a new position. The introduction includes why you are writing, the position you are applying for, where you have heard about the job and what best qualifies you for the position.
  • Cover letter body. This is where you discuss your experience, skills, and abilities related to the position. Specific skills and abilities may be tweaked from job to job, while others will likely be part of most position qualifications. When possible, focus on skills that are transferable and somewhat generic. Adjust these on a case by case basis.
  • Conclusion. The conclusion reiterates your interest, provides your follow-up intention (call next week to schedule an interview for example) and thanks to the employer for their time. Only the job position will change.

While not ideal, a standard cover letter template allows you to submit many applications quickly without being too generic.
